Next expedition

Tara Coral

For two and a half years, Tara will sail the waters of six countries: Malaysia, the Philippines,
Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Palau, and India. Scientists on board, in collaboration with local stakeholders, will collect samples during dives to study the resilience of corals in the Coral Triangle.

Ultimately, this expedition could lead to the creation of marine protected areas in zones where high resistance is observed, and to better selection of corals for potential replanting programs.

Protecting corals

Area of interest: the Coral Triangle Southeast Asia

Maritime region located in the western Pacific Ocean, comprising the waters bordering Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and the Solomon Islands (1% of the Earth’s surface).

  • 120 million people live in the Coral Triangle

  • 30%the world’s coral reefs

  • 78 km2coral reefs

  • 600different species form reefs

Objectives of the expedition

1) Conduct an exhaustive census of reef biodiversity, including both microfauna and macrofauna 2) Analyze the molecular factors and genetic regulators of thermal resilience
