A response to ecological grief
Zoë Slee is an Australian visual and ceramic artist whose practice centres on material research, installation, and cross-cultural exchange through international residencies, exhibitions, and collaborations. After completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) at the ANU School of Art in 2014, she developed her practice across Australia, Denmark, Greece, and Singapore. Her work has been exhibited in Australia and Europe, including the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize exhibition. More recently, residencies in Greece and Australia have informed new collaborative installations exploring environment, landscape, and modes of coexistence.

Her project
Zoë Slee explores liminal planes and moments of transformation in her artistic practice. Often drawn to myths, folklore and processes of change found in nature, focusing on the macro and micro perspectives through repetitive making processes. Using clay as her starting point, she creates highly detailed surfaces and objects through a combination of different media. The resulting objects inhabit multiple perspectives and ideas, sitting in transitional zones, engaging with dualities of both the living and the dead, the hard and soft, stasis and movement. They exist to capture and discuss movement and moments of change without inhabiting or being inhibited by one set form or idea, examining the threshold of human and ecological interactions.
During the residency, the artist will engage with the scientific team, observe and document research processes. She will also gather some first hand field recordings of the corals and the reefs they inhabit, both visual and sound based. From this she will develop a new body of work that responds materially and conceptually to the expedition’s findings.
